1st Thematic Meeting on people smuggling

On 24-25 May 2016, the Khartoum Process (EU Horn of Africa Migration Route Initiative) convened its first thematic meeting in Khartoum, Sudan. The meeting took place under the chairmanship of the UK and was co-convened and hosted by the Republic of Sudan.

The Khartoum Process' first thematic meeting concentrated specifically on people smuggling, with a particular focus on regional law enforcement and judicial response.

The meeting was split into four workshop topics on the theme:

  • Border Management
  • Information Sharing
  • Investigations
  • Prosecutions and Legislation in order to better investigate and tackle people smuggling within the Horn of Africa region within these specific areas

In each session, participants addressed current practices and what works well in each case and obstacles.

Ways of improving practices and the situation in the region were suggested in these respective areas.
