The Regional Training on Countering Trafficking in Human Beings was a two-day event elaborated and implemented as a means of delivering on the commitments made under the Italian Chairmanship of the Khartoum Process. The programme represented a first-of-a-kind activity in the framework of the Khartoum Process and was designed in consultation with the host country and based on the inputs provided by KP national focal points by means of a pre-training needs assessment, to ensure a tailored-fit content that addresses national and regional priorities in the fight against trafficking in human beings.

The event gathered over 40 participants from Khartoum Process member states and regional organisations such as IGAD, as well as representatives of international organisations such as IOM, UNDP, and UNCHR.

In addition to exchanges on key issues and challenges associated with effectively addressing the interconnected crimes of trafficking in human beings and smuggling of migrants, the Training Programme aimed to provide a platform for participants to issue recommendations for strengthening national capacities and regional cooperation on the matter.

The objectives of this event were to:

• Provide a comparative overview of the phenomena of THB and SoM, covering current trends and international standards and practices implemented globally and regionally to combat both crimes and to identify, assist and protect victims;
• Provide an overview of the relevant international law and the emerging international legal framework;
• Enhance participants’ understanding of trafficking in human beings, both in terms of the phenomenon itself, and in developing effective, victim-centred (policy) responses;
• Help identify ways in which states, law enforcement agencies and various other governmental and non-governmental organisations can work in partnership with each other to combat THB and to develop effective measures against it.
