Co-hosted by Kenya and Germany, the Thematic Workshop on Enhancing Transnational Law Enforcement Partnerships on Combatting Trafficking in Persons was held on 7 – 8 February 2024 in Nairobi, Kenya. This event was a pivotal gathering that focused on strengthening transnational law enforcement efforts against human trafficking in the Khartoum Process region. This workshop brought together experts and officials from various countries and organisations, including UNODC, the Regional Operational Centre (ROCK), Frontex, the East African Community (EAC) and ICMPD, among others. The primary objectives were to exchange knowledge, raise awareness about the advantages of cross-border police cooperation, and encourage the development of formalised anti-trafficking partnerships. The workshop featured presentations, panel discussions, and case studies highlighting the necessity of comprehensive strategies and collaboration across borders.
The workshop was particularly notable for its emphasis on the development and formalisation of anti-trafficking partnerships. By encouraging collaboration between different countries and agencies, the event sought to create a more cohesive and effective approach to tackling trafficking in persons. The discussions underscored the importance of integrating efforts across various sectors, including law enforcement, legal frameworks, and community involvement, to ensure a holistic response to human trafficking. The workshop concluded with actionable recommendations for enhancing transnational police cooperation within the Khartoum Process region, emphasising the need for ongoing dialogue and innovative approaches to combat the evolving nature of human trafficking. The thematic workshop marked a significant step in cross-regional dialogue, showcasing the power of collaboration and shared insights and the formation of robust partnerships. It reinforced the notion that the fight against human trafficking requires not just the involvement of law enforcement but a coordinated effort that spans across different sectors and international borders.
