The Khartoum Process successfully held its Thematic Meeting on Innovative Strategies for Combatting Trafficking in Human Beings and Migrant Smuggling on 10–11 December 2024 in Mombasa, Kenya. The two-day event brought together approximately 50 participants from member states, international organisations and the civil society to address the evolving challenges of human trafficking and migrant smuggling.
Discussions focused on the need for innovative responses to emerging threats, emphasising the 4Ps approach—Prevention, Protection, Prosecution, and Partnership. Participants explored strategies to raise awareness, protect survivors, and strengthen judicial cooperation. Attention was also given to the role of technology in prevention and the importance of fostering cross-sector partnerships to tackle these transnational crimes effectively.
The meeting concluded with actionable recommendations aimed at enhancing regional cooperation and capacity-building among Khartoum Process member states. Co-hosted by Kenya and Austria, the event reaffirmed the importance of collaboration and dialogue in addressing trafficking and migrant smuggling while ensuring the protection of those most vulnerable.
